How to Build a Small Wine Collection at Home — A Beginner’s Guide

You don’t need a cellar, a large budget or years of expertise to start building a wine collection. What you need is a plan, a few good bottles and somewhere cool to keep them. Here’s how to start.
Step 1 — Sort Out Storage First
Wine’s three enemies are heat, light and vibration. You don’t need a temperature-controlled cellar — you need somewhere that stays between 10–15°C year-round, away from direct sunlight and away from appliances that vibrate.
Options in order of cost: under the stairs, a north-facing cupboard, a spare bedroom corner, a dedicated wine fridge (from around £150), or a proper wine cabinet like the Goguette range which we stock in-store.
Bottles should be stored on their sides to keep the cork moist. That’s the only rule that really matters.
Step 2 — Start With a Mix of Drink-Now and Keep
The most common mistake is buying only wines to age. Build your collection in thirds:
- One third — wines to drink in the next 6 months (most bottles under £20 fall here)
- One third — wines for 1–3 years (Bordeaux Supérieur, Côtes du Rhône, village Burgundy)
- One third — wines for 5+ years (Classified Bordeaux, premier cru Burgundy, aged Champagne)
Step 3 — Build Around a Theme
Random collections are harder to manage and less satisfying. Pick a focus: French regions, a single producer you trust, food pairing, or value hunting in under-the-radar appellations.
Step 4 — Keep a Simple Record
A spreadsheet with wine name, vintage, purchase price, where from and when to drink is all you need. Vivino (free app) also works well for tracking and getting drink window guidance.
Step 5 — Buy Little and Often
Six bottles a month is more than enough to build a meaningful collection within a year. Spread across price points — four bottles at £12–£18 and two at £25–£40 — and you’ll have 72 bottles by the end of the year covering every occasion.
