Why We Only Sell French Wine — And Why That Is Not a Limitation

When people find out we focus exclusively on French wine, the first reaction is often surprise. Surely you are missing out? What about Italian wine, Spanish wine, the New World?

Here is why we disagree — and why the constraint is actually the point.

France is not a single wine country. It is about twenty.

Bordeaux alone contains more distinct appellations than most countries have wine regions. Burgundy has been mapping its individual vineyard plots — its lieux-dits — since the twelfth century. The Loire Valley runs for over a thousand kilometres, changing soils, grapes and styles as it goes. Champagne is unlike anything produced anywhere else on earth.

When you add Alsace, the Rhône, Languedoc, Provence, Jura, Savoie and Corsica to that list, you have enough variety to spend a lifetime exploring without ever running out of things to discover.

Depth beats breadth.

We could stock wines from a dozen countries and offer you a little of everything. Many merchants do exactly that. What they cannot offer is genuine expertise across every bottle on their shelves.

When you buy from 51 Wines, every single bottle has been tasted by Olivier and selected for a specific reason. He knows the producer. He has often visited the estate. He can tell you what the 2021 harvest was like and why the 2019 is drinking better right now.

That level of knowledge is only possible through focus.

Direct sourcing only works at depth.

Our relationships with French producers are what allow us to bring you wines you genuinely cannot find on a supermarket shelf. Those relationships take years to build. They require regular visits, shared meals, and a demonstrated commitment to representing a producer honestly.

We could not maintain that with producers across ten countries. We chose not to try.

The French have a word for it.

Terroir — the idea that a wine expresses the specific place it comes from, the soil, the climate, the tradition of the people who made it — is a concept France did not invent but absolutely perfected. Every wine we sell is an expression of a specific French place at a specific moment in time.

We find that endlessly fascinating. We hope you will too.

Olivier
