Domaine Pardon & Fils – La Croix Gaillard Morgon

Grape Variety

  • 100% Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc

Description

Produced by Domaine Pardon & Fils, a family estate whose winemaking roots in Beaujolais date back to 1820, La Croix Gaillard is sourced from the prestigious Morgon Cru. The vineyards are planted on ancient decomposed volcanic rocks and friable schist soils, a terroir renowned for producing wines of depth, structure and ageing potential. Hand-harvested and vinified using traditional semi-carbonic maceration, this wine perfectly balances the fruit-forward charm of Gamay with the power and complexity that make Morgon one of Beaujolais' most celebrated crus.

Tasting Notes

Appearance
Deep ruby red with vibrant purple highlights.

Nose
Intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and ripe dark fruits, complemented by floral notes of violet and subtle hints of spice.

Palate
Rich, generous and beautifully structured. Layers of cassis, blueberry and black cherry are supported by fine tannins and remarkable balance. The wine has both concentration and elegance, offering far more depth than many expect from Gamay.

Finish
Long and persistent, with lingering black fruit, gentle spice and mineral complexity derived from the volcanic soils.

Olivier's Thoughts

La Croix Gaillard is a brilliant example of why Morgon is often considered the king of the Beaujolais Crus. While many people associate Gamay with light and fruity wines, this bottle reveals a much more serious side of the grape. It has the vibrant fruit and freshness that make Beaujolais so enjoyable, but also a depth, structure and complexity that can easily rival far more expensive Pinot Noir or Burgundy wines.

What I particularly enjoy is the combination of juicy black fruit and elegant floral notes, all wrapped around a beautifully balanced structure. If you're looking to discover what premium Beaujolais can really achieve, this is a bottle I would wholeheartedly recommend. It is superb with roast duck, charcuterie or simply enjoyed with good company around the table.
